(Except for the gravity.) The sparse roads, though, don’t allow a film crew to drive right up to a location, so all of the gear had to be packed onto sleds - $5 plastic toboggans, Newman says proudly - and dragged onto the site. Past the mountain road, it’s not unlike driving on the surface of the moon. From Reykjavik, it’s another flight of about an hour into Akuyeri, a fishing and resort village at the mouth of a fjord on the north coast.įrom there, it’s a drive east, over the mountains toward Myvatn.

There’s an argument over Jon’s loyalty to the wildlings and, eventually, Ygritte distracts him from the argument by taking him to a cave and testing his vow of chastity in a very hands-on way. Viewers will recall the scenes in the third season of Game of Thrones in which Jon Snow and his new ladyfriend, Ygritte, roam north of The Wall with a band of wildlings. “Filming here is logistically challenging,” Newman says in what is a remarkable bit of British understatement.
